Hospice

When a person has a terminal illness and can no longer benefit from curative treatment, or simply no longer cares to pursue aggressive measures, St. Camillus Hospice brings compassionate care and comfort to the end of life journey. Hospice care focuses on treatment directed to the alleviation of suffering, be it physical, psychological, or spiritual.   Our hospice team is devoted to helping our clients in every step of their journey while maintaining full awareness of the inalienable dignity and sanctity of every human being.

St. Camillus Home Care Hospice is committed to fully follow the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services as defined by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.  These directives flow from the Church’s teaching about the dignity of the human person. We strive to enhance quality of each day for our clients and never take measures to intentionally shorten the duration of life.  Our interdisciplinary care team is comprised of doctors (your physician, if he or she agrees to work with the hospice team, and our Medical Director), nurses, hospice aides, social workers, chaplains, and volunteers. Being a Catholic Hospice means that we also have priests available around the clock to provide the Sacraments to anyone who desires them. We welcome clients from all faith backgrounds and our pastoral care staff provide invaluable support to clients on this journey.

Hospice is both a concept and a benefit, available to all people who meet certain criteria. The concept piece means that hospice care is not a destination, someplace you “go”, rather, it is care that is delivered wherever you call home. Home might be a private residence, Assisted Living community, or Skilled Nursing Facility, wherever the person’s day-to-day care needs can be met in the safest fashion. Hospice is care that focuses on maximum relief from symptoms of distress, promotion of safety and comfort, along with spiritual well-being. It adds a layer of support to existing caregivers, be they family, friends, or staff. The entire family is the client!

The benefit means that hospice care is covered under most insurance policies and Medicare has a standardized Hospice Benefit. It is important to know what the benefit does and does not include. Care and visits by the interdisciplinary care team, medications related to comfort and symptom-management, and any equipment indicated for safety and comfort are all paid for by the Hospice Benefit. The hospice team is available by telephone 24 hours a day but the benefit does not include caregivers in the home around the clock. Individual team members visit throughout the week as directed by the care plan, which is tailored to the specific care needs of each client. The cost of living wherever home is remains the responsibility of the client or family, meaning if hospice services are delivered in a house, Medicare does not take over the mortgage payments; by the same token, the fees for living in an Assisted Living or Skilled Nursing Facility are not part of the benefit. Eligibility includes a life expectancy of 6 months or less.

It is never too soon to begin conversations about goals of care and what quality of life means to you or your

loved one! A nurse from St. Camillus Hospice would be happy to provide a complimentary consultation any

time there are questions or concerns. We offer services to residents of our campus (all areas) as well as

individuals residing in Waukesha, Milwaukee, Washington, and Racine Counties.

St. Camillus Home Care and Hospice has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for

care quality and safety in home care. We pride ourselves on our personalized approach to care and

“Today my daughters and I were able to spend time with Dorothy. This moment we had was filled with love, grace and music. All of the incredibly nurturing individuals at St. Camillus who care for Dorothy made this possible for us. For this and so much more, I am indebted to you. I appreciate each and every one of you. Kindness rules and kindness transforms lives. Kindness, in its many forms is by far the most powerful tool - shaping itself, in any situation, to bring about a peace and comfort. My two girls and I will sleep better, knowing that our Dorothy is in your hands.”
